On Sunday Rev. Moodie reflected on Botticelli's painting of the Annunciation and how Botticelli has captured something of Mary's humanity and our own humanity. In the picture she is thrown off balance by the presence of the angel. Her body is turned away from the angel and pushed to the side as though she is trying to make an escape. Her hands are held out in the direction of the angel as though she is trying to protect herself.
The painting reminds us of those times when our lives are thrown off balance by a message we may not be ready to hear, or when a way opens up before us and we are not sure if we want to go down or if we will cope.
Just as God's Spirit in Luke 1:35 is described as overshadowing Mary, so the promise is that God's Spirit overshadows us too, constantly surrounding us with God's grace and love, inviting us to rest in God's peace in the midst of the difficulties of life so that we too can say with Mary "Let it be according to your word".
